How old are you?
When did you begin doing CrossFit? How long have you been with 5280 CrossFit?
I began my CrossFit journey in September 2016 when I walked into 5280 CrossFit.
Why do you CrossFit?
I do CrossFit because I wanted to become stronger and join a positive community of people who could help support my efforts to stick to a training program for more than a couple of weeks. I have so much fun at 5280, it is one of many happy places I have discovered here in Colorado.
Are you married, single, in a relationship? Do you have any children (“furry” children included)?
I’m a SWOK (single without kids). I am an Uncle to a beautiful dog named Maddie, her demands are small and she treats me like her favorite uncle, especially when I cook chicken.
What’s your favorite thing about living in Colorado?
My favorite thing about living in Colorado is the fitness culture. There are so many elite, gorgeous athletes around here, how could I not get into CrossFit? People here have a passion for adventure and intensity that I have not experienced anywhere else, it motivates me to keep working out so I can catch up and participate in all the things Colorado has to offer.
Favorite activity to do outside the gym?
My favorite activity outside the gym is playing Dungeons and Dragons once a week with a new group of friends I met shortly after moving here from New Hampshire. We drink really good beer, eat schools of Goldfish, and save the world. It is a great way to practice great storytelling (a skill I highly admire and hope to master one day).
How do you make time for CrossFit in your weekly schedule? What’s helped you stay committed?
Making time for CrossFit is easy for me since I work at night and the gym is 5 minutes away from me… so no excuses. Every day I go to the gym is a good day, so naturally I go as much as possible. I have seen really drastic results in my short time at 5280 which helps me stay committed.
What motivates you as an athlete at 5280 CrossFit?
My motivation comes from witnessing my own progress every day, I can do things that I never dreamed of (like handstands). The gym is such a positive environment that fosters growth and development of strength, speed, endurance, and character. The coaches here are unmatched; Jason has so much experience in so many realms of fitness he should write a book, Samantha is great at working with techniques and developing new athletes, Erin is dense ball of badass who can make you laugh even when you are exhausted, and Deidre is great at pointing out the small details of a movement to help you get a better grasp of kinetics. This amazing group of coaches motivate me to try my best every day.
What’s your favorite workout (WOD) or movement?
My favorite CrossFit movement would be anything involving putting weight over my head, especially the split jerk. I just feel like such a beast when I can stand up some weight.
What is one CrossFit goal you are currently working on?
The movement that I am focusing on now is double-unders, it is a beautiful thing to see and hear someone who can do them well and soon I’ll be whipping that thing around like it’s nothing.
What’s your favorite workout song?
I don’t have a favorite workout song, I like anything that is heavy and aggressive. I do also like the wub wub wub stuff because when the bass drops, amazingness happens.
Share one CrossFit story… (funny, cool, inspiring, etc)
There is so much cool stuff that happens in the gym it is hard to pick out one moment. I would say every second of the 2017 open was amazing, to have everyone there cheering me on and taking pictures made me feel like an all-star. The energy in the gym was excellent and I cannot wait until next years open!
What advice do you have for someone thinking about starting CrossFit?
I would advise anyone thinking about joining 5280 CrossFit to give it a try! It is such a great environment with room for all ages, skill sets, and fitness levels. The coaches are so knowledgeable and invested in your success; you can’t help but give it your all every time. CrossFit has made my life exponentially better, and I am so happy that I walked through those doors and met the owner Jason. He is a world class athlete who inspires those around him. I am so grateful that I stepped out of my comfort zone and tried something new… just do it!
