How old are you?
When did you begin doing CrossFit?
How long have you been with 5280 CrossFit?
I’ve had a monogamous relationship with 5280, it’s been my home gym since the day I started CrossFit.
Why do you CrossFit?
I CrossFit to add life to my years and so I can be active without draining myself. It’s nice to be able to do a spontaneous day hike, a multi day camping trip, a weekend of skiing or playing with all my nieces and nephews and still have the ability to do more.
Are you married, single, in a relationship? Do you have any children (“furry” children included)?
I am single and do not have any children. I love animals and wish I could get a dog, but I’m gone too much to justify having an animal waiting in my apartment.
What is your favorite activity to do outside the gym?
Sailing is what I’m meant to do. Colorado does have a bit of sailing, but it’s not as good as the ocean. I’m also fond of camping, Jeeping and hiking. I’ve hiked 12 of the 14ers and will be doing more.
How do you make time for CrossFit in your weekly schedule? What’s helped you stay committed?
My work schedule makes it pretty easy to get to the noon class, so it’s more of my CrossFit time that occasionally gets used for other things. The friendly accountability with the nooners definitely helps me stay consistent. The coaches are also pretty good at motivating me and it’s something that I genuinely do enjoy doing.
How has 5280 made your life better?
It’s made my life better in more ways than could ever be explained. The day I met with Jason to talk about joining I was a very unhealthy 260 pound 30 year old. I’ve become much healthier and am in the best shape I’ve ever been in, and there’s lots of room to improve. I had old injuries from years of playing football that I thought were just a part of my life forever. Through working on mobility and building strength I no longer hurt and the old injuries no longer haunt me everyday.
What is one CrossFit goal you are currently working on?
I’m getting double unders down. Coach Murph gave me some pointers a couple weeks ago that me to link together more than 5-10. Now it’s time to use them in the WODs and get them perfected to the point they are restful.
Share one CrossFit story… (funny, cool, inspiring, etc)
I’m one of the 5280 founding members and in the beginning I had a lot of 1 on 1 classes (because there wasn’t many of us). Many of those were with Jason and sometimes he’d jump in and do the WOD with me. It’s been incredible watching his progress over the last three and a half years. There used to be things I could keep up with him on or even beat him occasionally, those days are long gone. The dedication and perseverance he has is contagious and inspiring.
What advice do you have for someone thinking about starting CrossFit?
Find a great box and go for it! The support and camaraderie make it very easy to be successful in achieving your goals. Don’t be intimidated by the workouts, they can be scaled to any level and Rx will come with time. Investing in yourself is never regrettable and the only thing you have to lose is a few pounds and old limitations.
Tell us something most 5280 CrossFit members don’t know about you.
I’m not as scary as I may look to be, I’m just a teddy bear! 😁 To be serious, I’m always up for an adventure. Exploring new places is unbeatable, which explains a portion of my love for sailing. I’ve been very fortunate to have travelled and done some pretty cool things so far and I almost always have a plan for the next adventure. It’s a great conversation starter to get me out of being quiet.
