Name Gabby Luman
How old are you?
When did you begin doing CrossFit?
I tried it about 8 years for a month….Began my journey at 5280 last February.
How long have you been with 5280 CrossFit?
Almost one year!!
Why do you CrossFit?
I needed to get my butt in gear (again)! I grew up being a year around athlete and even played in college, but after college I claimed I was burnt out. Well, that excuse can’t last forever. I have done a couple ” bootcamps” that have been successful in the past, but again life took over. After gradually gaining weight and moving to CO (not really knowing anyone) and then having a baby, it was time to get my ass in gear. Crossfit is what I needed. I need to be coached, to be pushed to my limits for me to be me! I love lifting weights. I love being competitive (with myself). I know that my conditioning can get better, that’s why I come to class on conditioning days even though the “F” word may slip out our a couple times.
Thank you to everyone who has pushed me, cheered me on and all the high-fives to keep this girl coming back to 5280!!
Are you married, single, in a relationship? Do you have any children (“furry” children included)?
I have been with my hubby- Josh for 15 years and married for the last 6 years. We have 2 year-old boy, Avett. And can’t forget about our #1 boy- Floyd (black lab).
What is your favorite activity to do outside the gym?
There are sooo many!! Camping, concerts, fishing, any beach, shopping, road trips, the playground, breweries, festivals and good restaurants. As long as I’m with my boys, life is good!!
How do you make time for CrossFit in your weekly schedule? What’s helped you stay committed?
My Mother in-law is a tremendous help. She walks (lives in the neighborhood beside us) over to play in the mornings or I’ll wait for Josh to get home from work.
Josh has help me stay committed overall, he knows what I’m capable of and likes to hear about the daily WOD’s. Also knowing that I have to keep up with a 2 year old has help me stay committed too, I can carry his 25# butt up and down the stairs and chase him around all day long with no problem.
Realizing that I’m not getting younger, I have a toddler and an active husband is enough for me to stay committed for life!
How has 5280 made your life better?
See the answer above!! Plus I know I’m A LOT stronger. Being a stay at home mom isn’t as easy as it sounds, so getting out of the house is my #gabbytime and seeing familiar faces, having adult conversations, smiling & laughing while working my ass off is a good feeling.
What is one CrossFit goal you are currently working on?
RX double unders!! I’ve connected 9 in a row.
Share one CrossFit story… (funny, cool, inspiring, etc)
Watching my husband’s jaw drop when I told him I dead lifted 255# after a final Strength class cycle…thanks Spence! Can’t wait to see his face this time around!!
Also, Nancy and Wendy thought I was only 28 last week, so that was awesome!
What advice do you have for someone thinking about starting CrossFit?
That there’s no reason not to try CrossFit! It’s real people, with real lives wanting to be healthy, strong, fit and it’s inspiring to see diversity in each class.
Tell us something most 5280 CrossFit members don’t know about you.
• While in college I walked onto the Div.1 volleyball team and made the team (I haven’t shrunk- I was still 5’3″). Being my short self, I didn’t play in the front row, but there was game where I didn’t get subbed out and had to play the outside hitter (I was freaking out) and then I got set the ball….my 1st and only KILL (spike) was against Penn State!! I earned a scholarship my senior year and then broke my hand doing box jumps and missed the season.
• My husband and I owned two wine bars and started a brewery in South Carolina.
• I love rap music- some of you may know that from my answers to the question of the day. Haha
