When did you begin doing CrossFit? How long have you been with 5280 CrossFit?

Jess: I started CrossFit during the a 6 week challenge in May 2016.

Josh: I joined CrossFit in September 2016.

Why do you CrossFit?

Jess: I CrossFit to be fit and strong for myself, my kids, and my husband. I never thought I would continue on with CrossFit after my 6 week challenge, but with the support of my husband and the love I have for the feeling I get after each class I couldn’t walk away. CrossFit has truly bettered my life in many ways.

Josh: There are a lot of reasons why I do it but the biggest reason is for my health, mental and physical.

Are you married, single, in a relationship? Do you have any children (“furry” children included)?

Josh and I have been married for 9 years and have been together for about 16 years. We actually met over the phone as teenagers when one of his friends was “scared” to call me so he had Josh join in on the party line. We reconnected in college when I was 19 and Josh was 21 and have been together ever since. We have two kids, our daughter Olivia just turned 8 and our son Braxton is 4 ½.

What’s your favorite thing about living in Colorado?

Jess: the weather is beautiful and can’t be beat. I am not a fan of being cold but the winters here make it bearable, they are amazing and sunny. Summer is outstanding, I love the heat and I love how bright and clean Colorado is. Can you beat living in the foothills?!?! Colorado has so much to offer that anyone could be happy living here.

Josh: For me it’s got to be the weather and the people. No other state compares to CO.

What is your favorite activity to do outside the gym?

Jess: I am not an “active” person so CrossFit is opening my eyes to many new things. But I love food, summer nights with family, and a good cocktail. I enjoy baking, cooking, DIY, printable paper projects, and decorating our home.

Josh: Outside the gym my favorite activity is mountain biking. If I am not showing up for the noon class you will usually find me on the bike.

How do you make time for CrossFit in your weekly schedule? What’s helped you stay committed?

Jess: I am fortunate to work for my families business and Josh is my boss so I am able to do CrossFit during my lunch hour with ease, I love my noon class. I stay committed because I see results and I feel great!

Josh: I have a lot of flexibility at work so I just make it my top priority to hit the noon class. I think the biggest reason I keep going back has got to be 5280 CrossFit itself. The environment is great and that makes it fun to suffer and get in shape.

What motivates you to keep coming back to 5280 CrossFit?

Jess: Getting older and watching my kids become older and more active makes me want to be more active. I want to keep up and not stand on the sidelines. In class, getting a PR is such a motivator and connecting my first kick up handstand, I was SOOOO excited… each accomplishment gives me a new goal to strive for.

Josh: My biggest motivator is to get stronger and keep my sore body moving from the last work out. ha ha

How has 5280 CrossFit made your life better?

Jess: The PEOPLE at 5280. I have met some outstanding folks that I enjoy seeing each time I walk through the door. But obviously the functional fitness that it gives me that I bring to my daily life is something that I am constantly impressed and sort of surprised by.

Josh: The biggest improvement is the mental clarity I have after the work out. It’s nice to unplug for an hour and challenge yourself.

What is an activity or adventure that CrossFit has made you better at?

Jess: Like I said, I am not an “active” person and if you have been with me in class you know I hate running. But I remember one day I had the kids and couldn’t make it to class so I said, “kids get on your bikes, you ride to the park and I’ll run behind you”. I ran to the park, around the park, ran around in the grass with my kids, and ran back home. I never once had a moment of “I need a rest”. It wasn’t easy but it wasn’t impossible and I felt very good afterwards. CrossFit breads results as long and you show up and try!

Josh: My bike rides have improved a ton. My body is a lot more flexible than it has ever been. I find it easier to push myself harder.

What’s your favorite workout (WOD) or movement?

Jess: I love lifting weights on the bar. I never, in a million years, would I think my nail polish wearin’, curled hair, make-up lovin’, self-proclaimed girly girl would ever love the sweat and muscle that it takes to lift that bar. My favorites are back squats and thrusters.

Josh: There are a lot of workouts I enjoy but I have to say box jumps. They are brutal which makes them fun somehow.

What is one CrossFit goal you are currently working on?

Jess: I finally got my handstand but I still can’t start from a standing position, so I am working on that and pushing past my max handstand hold of 30 seconds.

Josh: I think the biggest thing I am working on would be my form. I want to make sure I am doing it right.

What’s your favorite workout song?

Jess: anything with a fast beat or happy dance rhythm. Right now I’m digging “scream and shout” by Will.i.am and Britney Spears and “I feel it Coming” by the Weekend and Daft Punk.

Josh: That’s tough one…any rap music. Seriously.

Share one CrossFit story… (funny, cool, inspiring, etc)

Jess: If you would have told me I would “win” an award (thumbs up award at the Christmas party) for my triceps just 2 years ago I would have laughed and checked what was in your drinking. Thanks for making this girl feel good about her muscle gains J!

Josh: Friday night lights (during the CrossFit Open) were a blast!!!

What advice do you have for someone thinking about starting CrossFit?

Jess: JUST SHOW UP! That’s always the hardest step.

Josh: Go in with an open mind.

Tell us something most 5280 CrossFit members don’t know about you.

Jess: When I was in junior high and high school I was in a teen group for Villa Italia mall, which is no longer around, and we did charity work and also runway and mannequin modeling on the weekends for the stores. I literally stood on platforms perfectly still for long periods of time like a mannequin or strutted my stuff as Posh Spice to promote Spice World the Spice Girls movie, haha.

Josh: When I was in 7th and 8th grade I would fly back to Ohio and work with my cousin’s husband selling t-shirts at concerts. I worked a lot of concerts during the summer and saw some crazy stuff. One of the most intense concerts I worked was Tina Turner…her fans were out of control. We couldn’t display the merchandise because they would just rip them off of the displays and take off running. It was hilarious.
