How old are you?
When did you begin doing CrossFit? How long have you been with 5280 CrossFit?
I began at 5280 when I signed up for a 6-Week Challenge so I have been doing CrossFit for 10 months now at 5280 and love every minute of it!
Why do you CrossFit?
So, originally it started out as, hey, I need to meet some people. I work from home so I felt as though I needed some socialization in my life and thought, hey, I could meet people, work out and that should be good, right?!
I now do CrossFit because I love the functional training as well as the healthier lifestyle that I have adopted along this journey. Plus, the people that I have met have certainly helped along the way. Everyone is so encouraging and motivating. The community that we have at 5280 is hands down the best!!!
Are you married, single, in a relationship? Do you have any children (“furry” children included)?
I’m in a wonderful relationship with my boyfriend Brian, and we have a 4 legged chocolate lab named Casey who is 9 years old!
What’s your favorite thing about living in Colorado?
I would have to say my favorite thing about living in Colorado is all that Colorado has to offer. The mountains, hiking, skiing/snowboarding, etc. Plus, part of my family lives here so it’s nice to have some family close.
Favorite activity to do outside the gym?
I really enjoy hiking, snowboarding, hanging out with family and friends, spending time with my dog, cooking, exploring new adventures/places, traveling, and trying new activities.
How do you make time for CrossFit in your weekly schedule? What’s helped you stay committed?
Fortunately I work from home so I have the flexibility in my schedule however, I tend to make a deal with myself each Sunday night and book the classes that I know I can get to for the week, and I then make it a non-negotiable to miss those classes each week if I don’t like the workout when I read it the night before. Unless something drastic comes up, I’ve been consistent! Plus, I love the way I feel after each workout and it helps manage the daily stress and frustration that comes up with my job.
What motivates you as an athlete at 5280 CrossFit?
Honestly, the people, coaches, and the feeling that I get about cheering others on in class is what continues to motivate me every day. That, and the improvements and PR’s help too!
How has 5280 made your life better?
I have met so many wonderful people at 5280 that I wouldn’t otherwise cross paths and I’m so happy for that. 5280 has also given me a new found love of working out that allows me to feel strong and confident on a daily basis.
What’s your favorite workout (WOD) or movement?
Any and all WOD’s quite honestly. I try to embrace each WOD and go into it with an open mind on how/what can I improve/learn from on this one. There’s WOD’s that I would prefer not doing (anything that involves running), WOD’s that I don’t mind (some people will think I’m crazy for saying this…rowing EEK), and then there are WOD’s that I would tend to run from just because I simply didn’t understand the movement or would get frustrated because I didn’t have the move down right, like, squat snatch. There is always room for improvement which is why I continue to show up for the running WOD’s and squat snatches just as I would with a workout that has rowing, kettle bell swings, or my new found favorite, kicking into a handstand and, maybe one of these days I’ll embrace a workout with push ups and do those without a box!
What is one CrossFit goal you are currently working on?
So my one big CrossFit goal is to do a freakin’ pull up, unassisted! Upper body strength is my weakness, so I’m slowly working on it every class.
What’s your favorite workout song?
I love music in general, so I would say that my favorite workout song would kind of depend on the type of WOD it is that day. Some days calls for some loud rock like “The Middle” by Jimmy Eat World or maybe The Black Keys, Fall Out Boy, and then other days when you just need something upbeat could call for possibly “Toublemaker” by Olly Murs, “Sunday Finest” by Sir Rosevelt or throw in some Enrique Iglesias “Messing Around” in the mix.
Share one CrossFit story… (funny, cool, inspiring, etc)
A few months ago I signed up to do the Festivus competition that was held in April. I thought, hey that would be cool to do. Then, the days leading up to it, I seriously thought of backing out. Like, who was I kidding, I had only been doing CrossFit for 6 months and thought I’m not the fittest person either. No one can do this with that little training. Those were my thoughts running in my head. However, one of the other ladies doing the competition for the first time as well asked if we could carpool. I said yes. Great, I thought, now I can’t back out. To make a long story short, I did the competition and I’m so glad I did. I had a PR on my power clean, and I surprised myself on how much I accomplished that day. Plus, we had a good group of people from 5280 there competing and others that came to cheer on our 5280 family, and while it was loud in the gym, I could always hear them cheering me on which pushed me and encouraged me throughout the day.
What advice do you have for someone thinking about starting CrossFit?
Just do it…you won’t regret it at all! While 5280 has been my one and only CrossFit gym experience, I would have to say that it is the BEST gym, with the BEST coaches, and the BEST members! Also, the feeling of seeing improvements is amazing throughout this process!!!
Tell us something most 5280 CrossFit members don’t know about you.
I may or may not have shared this with a couple people, but my first name, Nalin, is an American Indian name and it means morning. My middle name is Sun and I was born in the morning as the sun was rising. So, my name literally translates to Morning Sun. Yes, my parents were hippies and yes, I was born in the 70’s! And, yes, I tend to be a bit of a morning person!
